Smoke Detectors
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are an important part of your home’s safety. Fires happen, and in the event one does, a smoke detector can save your life.
Maintaining smoke detectors is critical. They should be tested monthly. All homes now also require a carbon monoxide detector on each floor to discern the existence of deadly gas. Because carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, it’s nearly impossible to detect without the help of a carbon monoxide detector. Taking an extra minute or so to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors can help you significantly during an emergency.
Are your smoke detectors more than seven years old? Do you have a carbon monoxide detector on each floor? Are your batteries still working in your hallways’ smoke detectors? For these and other related questions, Loughlin Electric is here to help.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Tips and Tricks
- If your smoke detectors are 7-10 years old, it’s time to replace them.
- There are two different ways to power a smoke detector: batteries or hardwiring into the homes electrical panel. Batteries should be replaced once a year, unless they’re lithium.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be tested monthly to ensure they’re working properly.
- A “chirping” smoke alarm usually means the batteries need to be replaced.
- Install smoke alarms in key areas (basement, attic, bedrooms, kitchen).
- Ensure that hard-wired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have a battery backup in case of a power outage.

What our customers are saying
“Let me start by saying Loughlin did a great job and was a joy to work with. Loughlin was the most expensive bidder for a small project I had done, but I hired them because I thought they seemed more professional than the others and I am glad I did. They were very tolerant of my frequent phone call and were ready to answer my questions without any condescension.” Steve J.
